Immigration Reform Leaders Arrested 4 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)Residents of the United States ( Documented or otherwise) are ready for congress to act on Immigration Reform THIS YEAR. The current system needs a serious change and now is the time to do it.
In the 2012 election cycle, Immigration reform was a a pivotal issue. The rhetoric surrounding it is one of the reasons that Latino Americans voted democrat by an overwhelming margin on November 6. The last election should have sent a message to Capitol Hill. That message? Now is the opportune time to pass for members of Congress to pass comprehensive immigration legislation. Both sides of the aisle agree that it needs to happen this year, but the devil is in the details.
The right wants more restrictive measures introduced. We see examples of that in Arizona, Georgia, Alabama and various other states throughout the Union. The left wants to ensure that our immigration policy accounts for the families and lives involved. The way that we tackle this topic will affect not only our population, but also our economy for several generations to come.
The Obama Administration called for a bipartisan group of legislators to come together and form the framework for immigration reform. It includes a path to citizenship ( which many on the left want) and increased border security ( which many on the right want).
Senator Marco Rubio and Senator John McCain, walking the party line, both said that they would not vote for anything the White House sends to congress.
So, What are the reforms we want, how do we get these reforms passed and how will it ultimately affect the country?
We want reforms that allow families to be together, that have guest worker programs, and basically open our doors to the best that the world has to offer in the fairest and most efficient ways. This cuts down on the reasons that people have to enter the United States without prior authorization.
