I wasn’t going to blog too much about what I was doing with my summer ( outside of what I already told you guys ) but I was super moved by this story. I work as an organizing Fellow at the Obama for America Office. We have people come in regularly and ask to volunteer because they believe in President Obama’s vision for this country. Today, a woman came into the office with what seemed to be all of her belongings. Her hair was a bit unkempt and she was wearing a loose fitting button down striped shirt and tattered jeans. She told me and a few of the other fellows her story.
I’m a skeptic by nature. I don’t often believe people when they tell me really sad stories. I often reserve my sympathy for cases involving small children and the elderly. However, there was something about this woman that made me believe her. She is a veteran who is homeless and unemployed. She risked her life to protect ours and she is living in a homeless shelter. Her safety is not guaranteed. She is always looking for a way to find her next meal and that got to me. She was obviously in need of the kind of help that most people want to give but can’t afford to give. She said that she knew the President Obama was for her. She said she wanted to help get him re-elected and provided us with as much contact information as she could.
Even in hard times, she wasn’t looking out for herself. She wants to volunteer to help. She wants to help other people facing her problems have better lives, and in the era of the personal pity party, this sort of selflessness often blows my mind.
The fact that you can go fight for this country and not be treated with all the respect and honor you deserve upon returning home is not something I can understand. This is one of the MANY reasons I support President Obama. He actually cares. He is making the hard decisions, He is looking out for the working class and middle class American family. He is looking out for veterans, He is looking out for women, immigrants, LGBT, Police Officers, educators, firefighters. He is a president that believes we all deserve a chance at the good education and good health care and the American dream.
I recently posted a series of pictures on instagram to outline my summer goals. I’m adding another to my list. Help President Obama get re-elected. I hope that you will add this to your goals for summer and fall 2012 as well.
Volunteer at you local OFA office, Register to vote, and let’s get President Obama FOUR MORE YEARS.
